Five Metrics Every Growing Business Should Track
July 22, 2026 · 6 min read · RolaFlux Group
Dashboards fail in two directions: too few signals to see the business clearly, or so many that nothing stands out. For most small and medium-sized businesses, five well-chosen metrics give leadership a true picture of health and momentum.
The core five
Revenue growth rate tells you if the engine is working. Gross margin tells you if growth is worth having. Customer acquisition cost and lifetime value, viewed together, tell you if your growth model is sustainable. And cash runway tells you how much room you have to make mistakes and adjust.
Notice what these have in common: each one connects activity to outcome. Page views, followers and open rates can be useful diagnostics, but they are means, not ends. Anchor your leadership reporting on metrics that would matter to a lender, an investor or a buyer, because they are the ones that actually describe the business.
Make them operational
A metric only matters if it changes behaviour. Assign an owner to each number, set a target and a review cadence, and agree in advance on what action follows when a metric moves the wrong way. That last step, the pre-agreed response, is what separates reporting from management.
Start simple, stay consistent, and add sophistication only when the basics are reliably in view. Five honest numbers, watched closely, will take most businesses further than fifty ignored ones.
